What a Crazy and Awesome Ride

So, the last couple of days have been interesting, right? I mean, I’m pretty used to having the adoration of my thousands of readers and I’ve always been a sparkling social media queen. But I will admit that my article at BlogHer created a bit of a stir, not that I didn’t expect it, because it was brilliant writing on my part.

HOLY SHIT YOU ALL! Seriously, I had no idea that blog post would blow up like it did. It was such a surreal, yet giddy experience. Since Thursday, my post on BlogHer has gotten almost 24,000 views, 135 comments there, almost 944 Facebook shares from BlogHer and almost 200 shares from BlogHer to Twitter. {Update from her husband. She’s too modest to add this – 45,000+ views,  215 comments on BlogHer, 1320+ Facebook shares from BlogHer and 229 shares from BlogHer to Twitter as of the end of the day on Saturday} My wonderful food blogging friends spread it around on Thursday (which I am very appreciative of – I owe you all a drink but it will have to be Franzia because I’m poor). Then I woke up Friday to find that David Lebovitz had posted it on his fan page and things got even crazier. The only bigger thing that could happen to this post is if someone posted it on Reddit, and they kind of scare me over there.

This whole thing amazed me so much that my husband went down to the liquor store and spent part of my future wages on a bottle of Cava. I felt just like Ernest Hemingway. I mean, I’m sure he could drink a lot more than me, but I have full confidence that I’m much better at fishing than he was. I’m not new to stuff going viral on the internet. I’m sure you’ve seen my other claim to fame, this video here:

PS – I’m the girl in orange

I’m willing to admit after checking my stats that I might now have more than 10 readers. It’s probably at least 15 now, 20 on a good day.

If you all promise to go tweet each recipe on my blog at least 17 times, I’ll send you a new dishwasher. His name is Marcus and he’s a bit of a smartass.  He’s a very cute boy which makes up for it.

Hell – if I get more than 25 new followers on Pinterest this week, I promise to keep adding to my “Sad Cake Pop” Board. I know I’m supposed to offer you a chance to win a KitchenAid mixer for that kind of sacrifice, but all I can promise is a Pinterest board. Because I’m a giver.

Again, I hope you’ll stay awhile. I have an RSS feed. You can follow me on Twitter. I tweet lots of cat pictures.

I managed to get 10 likes on my Facebook page, so I’m trying to figure out how to use it. At 50 fans, I obviously will start work on my new cookbook. I promise if I ever reach 100 fans, I will post a picture of myself creatively using baker’s twine. If I get 200 fans, I will videotape myself drinking a carrot cake martini. If I get 350 fans, I will attempt to make the “turducken” of the baking world that I described in my post.  And if I hit the big time and get 500 fans? I will make cake pops and have someone take pictures and maybe some videotape. Please understand that tape will have a R rating. I also have a feeling the pictures of them will have to go on my “Sad Cake Pop” Pinterest board.

Yes, it’s obvious I’m whoring myself out for Facebook fans, but I’m willing to whore myself out AND humiliate myself at the same time. And if I don’t get any more fans on Facebook? Well, that’s when I get mean. I will post on all of my current 33 fans Facebook walls, 17 times a day about how authentic I am.

Seriously – to all of you who cheered me on and had faith in me, I love you. For all of you who read this over before it got published and made some very helpful grammar and punctuation suggestions? My readers thank you. So do I. Thank you to everyone who tweeted about the article or shared it on Facebook. Thank you for all the great comments at BlogHer and here at my blog. For those of you who said nice things about my writing, you made me cry which always scares the hell out of my cats. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Shit, this means I have to write more – doesn’t it?

PS – If you don’t know my style really well, I suggest you read my About Me page. This will keep you from getting angry at my obviously “pretentious” and “egotistical” attitude.

Aw man. I didn’t mean to make you cry. But at least they were tears of joy. Although I’m not sure how I feel about making you make your cats feel uncomfortable. If that makes sense. And its your “pretentious” and “egotistical” attitude that we love, don’t change it please. It’s good to see you’re getting all of this well deserved attention though. And lastly, love you too.

Thank you Joshua. :) Sometimes people have a really tough time seeing sarcasm which gets me into trouble with those people. But most know I’m just making fun of myself.

This absolutely means you need to post often, because so many of the awesome blogs I’ve found recently are ones that make me all excited…and they they announce their hiatuses. So you’re not allowed to do that. Congrats on the added exposure and cheers to more delightful stories!

How about this? I promise to try not to take hiatuses. The last couple of years have not been good ones, but writing is starting to feel right to me again. I’m trying to go with the flow. And thank you! I’m still a bit freaked out by it. :D

Enjoy your instant fame. I, for one, almost spit out my morning coffee while reading your rants. The sad part, you made total sense. I took the whole thing as tongue in cheek. I want more, yes. I did the whole subscribe, tweet, Facebook share, Google + thing. It made my day. Enjoy.

Hee – “instant fame” Did you know that on the internet, you only get 5 seconds of fame as opposed to 5 minutes. I’m glad you can see the whole thing as being a joke on all of us, including me. I think a few people didn’t get that part. ;) Thank you for the compliments – the only thing I can say is that I have no idea how G+ works so that one is going to be a bit dicey.

I’ve always known you were a great writer. :) And I raise a toast to you with a glass of chocolate wine regarding hooking that shark. You so famous.

You’re so sweet! And seriously, did you try the wine? It’s weird but not gross. Ah yes – the fleeting 5 seconds of internet fame. :D

Yep, I am visiting your blog because I utterly loved the Blogher post. Dead on. I left a more detailed adoring comment over there. Congrats and enjoy the notoriety;) And I’m subscribing to you, so pop another bottle!

Thank you so much Julie! I had fun writing it because if food bloggers can’t joke about ourselves from time to time, we need to quit blogging. I’m laughing at the “notoriety” comment. I’ve heard that that was my sole reason for writing it. ;) I sure will enjoy is as soon as I get over being shocked by all of this. :D So surreal.

Thank you so much Helena! It was a really fun post to write because a group of food bloggers helped me with the list, & we had so much fun coming up with stuff, most of them stuff we’ve done.

I am so glad you posted that, because I am thinking and rethinking of posting something similar.
I am so ooooverrrr #7-13 & cake pops especially.
And the blog promotion, I think you forgot to add “Join my Site & I’ll join yours” the bloghop blah blah blah to gain more followers … uggggh!!!
And I am soooo guilty with using props. Hehehe!
Well I’ll try not to use as much
    Love your post!

We’re all guilty of a lot of these! :D And if you love props and they make you happy, then have fun with them. My list was tongue-in-cheek and they’re certainly not rules of any kind. I’d just like for people to be inspired by others work, not straight out copying them.

Wow…I love bacon, bourbon, and sarcasm (not necessarily in that order), so you are my new favorite blogger! I too found you via the blogher article that someone shared on Facebook! Congrats on the new found success – nice to have another funny/irreverent voice to add to my list of must reads! :)

Melissa – thank you! It was such a fun, silly thing to write and I had a lot of fun doing it, while laughing with my food blogger friends about how many of the things we do on our own blogs. But I’m warning you – I love to post silly posts but I do post serious stuff on there.

I would totally whore myself out via brownie turducken and twine for 500 Facebook fans… after over a year I have like 80. And OMG is that seriously you in that video?!!! We caught that on GMA right before we went to the beach this summer. Fortunately we’ve spent our last few trips at Oak Island but Garden City is where we always vacationed before!! As a life-long resident of the Carolinas that TOTALLY freaked me out. Looooving your blog. So happy you’ve had such awesome response!!
